NCC Building Suomi is one of Finland’s largest construction and property development companies and a leading construction company in the Nordic region. NCC Building Suomi is part of the NCC Group, which reported a turnover of approximately 5 billion euros in 2023 and employed 12,200 people. In Finland, NCC operates in property development, construction, and aggregate production.
Derigo Oy, founded in 2008, is a Finnish company specializing in project management development, particularly in the construction industry. Based on its years of experience, Derigo has developed its own Pro3 product family in close co-operation with its clients to serve project businesses. Today, Pro3 has thousands of users in Finland and in international projects worldwide.
NCC has been one of Derigo’s longest-standing clients, utilizing the Pro3 project management system since 2013. Over the years, numerous individuals from NCC’s various units have been involved in the system’s development to ensure it fulfills end user needs.
Background of the co-operation
NCC’s Quality Manager, Jussi Klemola, serves as the Pro3 system’s main user. He is responsible for maintaining and developing the system to meet the company’s needs in collaboration with NCC’s teams and Derigo’s experts.
The Pro3 system at NCC has been developed over the years through different product strategies, including the implementation of customized functionalities and the use of standard Pro3 extensions. In 2022, NCC completed a Pro3 renewal and development project aimed at maximizing the efficiency of the system’s core functionalities. This also simplified system maintenance and development significantly while refreshing the interface to improve user-friendliness.
“Product development has been done systematically together in close co-operation. A few years ago, we introduced a quarterly model for development, where we jointly agree on development goals, budgets, and timelines for the upcoming quarter. Progress is monitored in weekly follow-up meetings, and adjustments are made as needed. This approach has proven to be highly agile and cost-effective,” Klemola explains.
NCC Building Suomi’s Strategy Director, Ismo Tiittanen, who has also been actively involved in the development process, highlights the collaboration’s strengths:
“The cooperation with Derigo’s team in product development and customer service has been exceptionally smooth and efficient.”
The role of Pro3 at NCC
NCC’s operational system is designed with Pro3 serving as an comprehensive solution that integrates information from various systems into one central repository.
“Pro3 allows us to combine all data into a shared database, enabling seamless data transfer between systems. This integration, processing, and refinement of data are critical requirements for such a system, and Pro3 has met this role exceptionally well,” says Klemola.
“We have plenty of quality data showing that the better our operational system is followed in projects, the more likely they are to achieve their set goals. Ease of use is, of course, essential to ensure compliance. This ease of use requires a capable and adaptable platform that enables effective real-time monitoring and analysis of project progress and compliance,” Tiittanen adds.
Most modern companies use multiple systems and aim to integrate them to ensure they complement rather than overlap each other. At NCC, a core principle is that data is always entered and updated at the source, ensuring its accuracy and reliability.
“We’ve found an effective way to bring necessary information into Pro3 via APIs, which we utilize in BI reporting. From our perspective, it’s incredibly valuable to have this capability,” Klemola explains.“We truly value the ability to have everything accessible in one place. There’s no need to jump between systems – critical data for management is always readily available in Pro3,” Tiittanen emphasizes.
A Foundation for quality and systematic operations
NCC operates with a management system certified under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. These are forming the foundation for systematic management and continuous improvement.
Pro3 plays a significant role in quality and environmental management audits, both internal and external, ensuring compliance with operational requirements and processes.
“Thanks to Pro3, audits have shifted focus from searching for paperwork or top-level processes to concrete discussions about specific procedures and why they’re followed. This is one of the most significant benefits we’ve gained through Pro3,” Klemola notes.
Looking ahead, NCC plans to use Pro3 to manage both business and development projects. This means that teams involved in development work will use the same platform, and decision-making and governance will occur through Pro3, ensuring a traceable record of all actions.
Central source of information and a management tool
Pro3 is used daily by nearly 500 NCC employees across various business areas, particularly those involved in managing construction projects.
NCC’s core focus is managing the construction process, which requires defined processes that are followed, improved, and implemented effectively.
When it comes to construction projects, NCC promises that Pro3 always contains the most up-to-date guidance for current practices. If instructions aren’t found in Pro3, they don’t exist. Each project relies on the system for the latest guidelines, documents, and tasks.
“Pro3 includes integrated tools and practices that facilitate management. For instance, during project initiation or approval processes, we use digital forms to monitor and approve decision points. Pro3 stores all official decision-making documentation and includes tools like risk management, which are available for all projects,” Tiittanen explains.
“With all practices consolidated into one place, the dashboard serves as the central channel for projects, providing a clear view of what’s been done and how. It eliminates the need for separate reporting while offering a comprehensive, transparent overview of projects across organizational levels. Dashboards are essential,” Klemola adds.
Tailored functionalities for NCC
Several customized extensions and functionalities have been implemented in Pro3 to meet NCC’s unique needs. Despite these tailored features, the system’s foundation remains the standard Pro3.
A recent addition is an auditing tool for internal audits, which helps identify what needs to be inspected on construction sites. It enables site audits and the documentation of non-conformities, all handled within Pro3.
“For example, if something isn’t done according to instructions, or if it’s done exceptionally well, these can be scored, resulting in a report showing how well the operational system is being followed,” Klemola explains.
Taxonomy reporting requirements
The demand for sustainability-related reporting is set to grow significantly. Pro3 includes a taxonomy-compliant reporting system built using its core functionalities.
“I can honestly say that this is a fantastic tool. Achieving this has required extensive effort across companies in Europe, so it’s great to see such a simple and integrated solution available,” Tiittanen notes.
“The examples mentioned in the article clearly demonstrate that years of co-operation between Derigo and NCC have laid a strong foundation for the development of the Pro3 system, which supports both NCC’s business needs and Derigo’s goals to further develop the Pro3 system. Satisfaction with the system in Finland has also enabled its expansion into NCC’s operations in Norway,” state Derigo’s founders Jussi Rantala and Jukka Vornanen with satisfaction.
